Two years after lung cancer surgery, consultation at St. Luke’s International Hospital
After undergoing surgery one year ago, the tumor recurred. I was told in Canada that a second surgery was not possible. However, Professor Maruyama, a renowned glioma surgeon at Tokyo Women’s Medical University Hospital, agreed to perform the operation. The surgery was extremely difficult, but it was successful. Since then, I have been continuing treatment with chemotherapy and molecular targeted therapy. Although there are still many challenges ahead, receiving treatment in Japan has given me hope and courage.
Recurrent brain glioma after surgery, treated at Tokyo Women’s Medical University Hospital
Despite undergoing multiple rounds of chemotherapy at hospitals in my home country, the disease could not be controlled. The tumor pressed on the nerves in my leg, causing severe pain, and I could not even sleep at night. When I felt I could no longer endure it and was close to giving up, I learned that there was a new treatment option available in Japan. Believing it to be my last chance, I decided to go to Japan. I still remember the nurses looking close to tears when they first saw me in a wheelchair. At that time, I received a combination treatment using a molecular targeted drug and an immune checkpoint inhibitor, which was still in clinical trials. Within the first week, the pain in my leg gradually began to ease, and being able to sleep again was the greatest relief of all. I continued the treatment, and over time the pain disappeared and my spirits grew brighter. I began to believe in my heart that I could overcome cancer. Three months after starting treatment, a PET CT scan showed that the cancer was completely gone. I was unbelievably happy. The doctor was also delighted and said it was a miracle. That decision saved my life, and I remain deeply grateful.
Stage IV endometrial cancer, National Cancer Center of Japan
An 8 mm nodule was found in my right lung during a routine health check. The opinion of the local doctor was to observe it, but I was very worried and wanted to seek the opinion of an overseas specialist as well. After researching various options, I arranged a second opinion with Professor Ohira at Tokyo Medical University Hospital in Japan. The professor explained that there was about a 90 percent chance the nodule was malignant and recommended surgical removal. I decided to proceed with surgery. One month later, I underwent the operation at a hospital in my home country. The pathological results showed malignant adenocarcinoma, stage IA. The doctor told me that because it was detected at a very early stage, there was little concern about recurrence. I have since focused on maintaining my immune strength through immunotherapy, and three years have passed without any recurrence. Looking back, Professor Ohira’s advice was extremely valuable. Because I chose surgery at that time, I am now healthy and able to live my life fully.

I had been taking molecular targeted therapy to prevent recurrence after lung cancer surgery, but the side effects were severe and I continued to suffer from high blood pressure. At the same time, I was worried about recurrence, so I felt unable to stop the medication and was unsure what to do. I then arranged a remote consultation with a respiratory specialist at St. Luke’s International Hospital in Japan to seek a second opinion. The conclusion was that, because my cancer had been detected at an early stage, taking molecular targeted drugs would not change my survival rate. The doctor clearly explained the data to support this and spent nearly an hour providing a thorough explanation. After the consultation, I felt reassured and much more at ease. I was deeply impressed by the doctor’s careful and thoughtful explanation.
